What is Shared Solar?

Duke Energy's Shared Solar program allows qualified residential and nonresidential customers to share in the benefits of an optimally located solar array. As a program participant, you will receive credits on your electric bill for the solar power produced by your subscription. Save money with Shared Solar

Duke Energy’s Shared Solar program provides access to solar energy without the installation or maintenance cost of an array on your property. When you sign up for Shared Solar, the monthly credits from your portion of the solar-generated electricity will be displayed on your Duke Energy account statement. The number of credits you receive is dependent on the size of the subscription.

We estimate that residential customers will earn back their initial payment in credits from the solar array in about one year and that nonresidential customers will earn them back in under three years. With Shared Solar, you are not only saving on your electric bill, you are directly supporting a renewable energy future in South Carolina for generations to come.

Top FAQs

How do I know if Shared Solar is right for me?

plus

Duke Energy’s Shared Solar program is ideal for those who are either unable to or not interested in completing a solar installation on their personal property. Renters, condominium owners, nonprofit organizations, community centers, places of worship and property owners are encouraged to apply for the program.

Who is eligible for Shared Solar?

Duke Energy customers holding active accounts with metered service within the service area of South Carolina may be eligible to participate. At the time of application, the Duke Energy account must be current (paid in full).

Account holders currently participating in net metering or Duke Energy deferred payment plans (Deferred Payment Arrangement, Pay As You Go, Individualized Payment Plan, Long-term Payment Plan) are not eligible. Customers currently in bankruptcy will be disqualified from participating. If a Duke Energy account is not eligible for any of the reasons outlined within these terms, account holders may update their account information and reapply.

Income-qualified assistance is available for those who meet the requirements. View the guidelines and a list of community organizations available to facilitate this request.

How is my Shared Solar maximum subscription calculated?

Once your account is verified, you will be presented subscription size options based on your historical usage, and the associated prices for consideration.

Duke Energy does not recommend signing up for the maximum subscription if you think your energy use will decrease over the next 10 years. Subscriptions of program participants whose total bill is negative for four consecutive months will be reviewed and possibly reduced. If this happens there will be no refunds to application or subscription fees.

How are my Shared Solar charges and credits calculated?

Program fees and credits vary by participant’s subscription size, time of year, and weather. Please click here for an explanation of program costs, and here for an explanation of program credits, and here to see how time of year and weather impact solar output.

Where will my Shared Solar charges and credits be displayed on my Duke Energy bill?

After your enrollment is submitted, the appropriate application fee and subscription fee will be added to your next Duke Energy statement. Once the fees are paid, your enrollment in the program will be finalized and you will begin to see the charges and credits on subsequent Duke Energy statements. You can also access your account details on our customer portal. Details will be sent to you once your Shared Solar account has been activated.

Can I increase my Shared Solar subscription?

Yes. A nonrefundable application fee of $20 will be applied each time a qualified account holder chooses to increase their subscription. This includes account holders who were only able to initially subscribe to a portion of their desired subscription due to capacity limitations.

Can I decrease my Shared Solar subscription?

Yes. However, there are no refunds, penalties or fees applied to your Duke Energy account.

What happens to my Shared Solar subscription if I move?

Program participants who move within the Duke Energy service territory where their subscription was originated may transfer the subscription to their new service address. Program participants who move outside of Duke Energy service territory where their subscription originated will be removed from the program.

Can I cancel my Shared Solar subscription?

Yes. Cancelation of your subscription is effective immediately, and there are no refunds, penalties or fees applied to your Duke Energy account.

What federal, state or local tax incentives are there for participation in the Shared Solar program?

At this time, there are no tax incentives or credits available for program participation.

Why is Duke Energy doing this if it lowers bills?

Many customers who want to take advantage of the economic or environmental benefits of solar energy cannot put solar equipment on their property. Duke Energy wants to make solar available for those customers and to help promote solar energy in South Carolina.
